How should we confront the February 28 coup? The panel on this topic was held on Wednesday, February 28 at 14:00 at the Istanbul Seta Foundation in partnership with SETA and KADEM.
The panel was moderated by KADEM President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sare Aydın Yılmaz, while the speakers; Dr. Esra Albayrak, Dr. Fatmanur Altun, Dr. İsmail Çağlar, and Prof. Dr. Atilla Yayla shared their experiences from that period and evaluated the consequences of the coup and its reflections on today.
After the opening speech by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sare Aydın Yılmaz regarding the February 28 process, the speakers who shared their insights on the coup included Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Atilla Yayla, followed by SETA Director of Society and Media Research Dr. İsmail Çağlar, President of TÜRGEV Dr. Fatmanur Altun, and President of the Women’s Council of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Dr. Esra Albayrak.
Despite twenty-one years having passed since the post-modern military coup of February 28, the pressure and prohibitions imposed on society still remain in memory, and the February 28 military coup was not limited to the military's takeover of governance; it also prevented the enjoyment of the most fundamental personal rights and freedoms, and the cost of citizens being deprived of basic rights such as education, freedom of expression, and freedom of belief is still being paid.
In Turkey, journalism, foreign affairs, and the fields of culture and art have always been conducted through a caste system created by elites dependent on the West.
Dr. Fatmanur Altun, President of TÜRGEV, who personally experienced and fought against February 28, began her speech by recounting her experiences from that period, stating that she could never forget the shock she felt when she saw professors and administrators enthusiastically engaging in the practices of February 28. Altun explained that this caste system was one of the main actors of February 28.
