The cultural heritage, resilience, and memory of Gaza were explored in the program "The Language of Witness: Gaza and Literacy," where participants learned to read Palestine anew beyond the war; through its culture, art, and human stories.
The second session of the Witnessing Language: Gaza and Literacy program was held on Saturday, November 1, at the Rami Library. The guest of the program titled "Cultural Literacy – Gaza’s Culture, Resistance, and Memory" was researcher-writer Emine Çınar.
Cultural Literacy – Gaza’s Culture, Resistance, and Memory
It was emphasized that Gaza should be seen not only as a war geography but also as a civilization area rooted in a deep culture, history, and resistance. Emine Çınar conveyed to the participants how Palestine's rich cultural heritage has created a language of resistance in the face of sieges and destruction.
Throughout the program, topics such as recognizing different cultures from a cultural literacy perspective, establishing empathy, and moving away from an orientalist view were discussed. Participants had the opportunity to rethink how a people preserves its memory through Palestine’s art, literature, and daily life practices.
The Witnessing Language: Gaza and Literacy program series conducted by TÜRGEV will continue to offer young people the opportunity to evaluate current issues from a cultural, moral, and humanitarian perspective.
The next session will take place on Saturday, November 15, with the title Visual Literacy – The Language of the Visual: Constructing Meaning in the Relationship of True Representation, featuring Prof. Dr. Ali Büyükaslan at the Rami Library.
